George and Serepta Lane
George Washington and Mary Francis (Duncan) Lane
Our great great grandfather, George
Lane, was born in 1820 in Franklin County Ohio near Columbus. It is
believed he was the son of William Lane. His mother's name is not
known at this time. He married Serepta Hand on March 30, 1839 in Madison
Co. Ohio. She was about 15 years old at the time of their marriage. According to the 1840 and 1850 census records, they
lived in Prairie Township, Franklin Co. Ohio where they had five
children. Henry Lane born in 1840, George W. Lane born December
19, 1842 , Mary Elaine Lane born April 6, 1848, Scott Lane born in
1850 and Phebe Jane Lane born in 1852. According to census records
the family moved to Warren County, Indiana in the mid 1850s.
There the family took up farming and two more
children were born to George and Serepta. They are: William George 1857
and Delliah Alice 1862. Most of
the family moved from Warren County Indiana to Cass County near
Logansport, Indiana in the 1860s. Serepta, our Great Great Grandmother was not listed in the 1870 census in Cass County with George, Scott, William and Delilah so she is assumed to have died sometime before 1870. It has not been determined when or where
our GG Grandfather George Lane died, but six of the seven
children were married in Cass County Indiana. Henry married Eliza Hudlow March 7,1870; Mary Elaine married Hiram
Lawrence March 7, 1866; Phebe Jane married Joseph Lavack, October 29, 1869;
William G. married Sarah Chestnut September 21, 1882; and Delliah A.
