George and Serepta Lane
George Washington and Mary Francis (Duncan) Lane
Our great great grandfather, George
Lane, was born in 1820 in Franklin County Ohio near Columbus. It is
believed he was the son of William Lane. His mother's name is not
known at this time. He married Serepta Hann on March 30, 1839 in Madison
Co. Ohio. She was about 15 years old at the time of their marriage. They
lived in Prairie Township, Madison Co. Ohio where they had five
children. Henry Lane born in 1840, George W. Lane born December
19, 1842 , Mary Elaine Lane born April 6, 1848, Scott Lane born in
1850 and Phebe J Lane born in 1857. According to census records
they moved to Warren County Indiana in the mid 1850's.
There the family took up farming and two more
children were born to George and Serepta. They are: William George 1857
and Delliah A. 1862. According to the 1870 Indiana census most of
the family removed from Warren County Indiana to Cass County near
Logansport Indiana. It has not been determined when or where
our GG Grandparents George and Serepta died, but six of the seven
children located in Cass County Indiana. Those married in Cass County
are: Henry married Eliza Hudlow March 7,1870, Mary Elaine married Hiram
Lawrence March 7, 1866, Phebe J married Joseph Lavack October 29, 1869,
William G. married Sarah Chestnut September 21, 1882, and Delliah A.
married Charles Miller October 31, 1882.
George W. and Mary Francis (Duncan)
Grandfather, George W. did not move to Cass County Indiana, but went
to work for the railroad and settled in Vermilion County, Illinois near
Danville. There he met a widow, Fannie (Duncan) Munday on January
6,1876. To this union were born four sons: John Lane who died in 1904 in a coal
mine accident; James (Tommy) Lane born 1877 and died in 1937,
Frank Lane who died in Elkville, Illinois, my Grandfather, Hiram Alonzo
Lane born January 1,1884 and died February 26, 1946. He lived in
Hillery and when he died he had been living in Vermilion Heights, part
of Danville, Illinois.
